open house wien The task really wasn’t easy: a modern large-scale construction in the inner city, offering enough room for future students and teachers, with a publicly accessible area at street level. Indeed, the slightly reset large auditorium and the surrounding pedestrian zone have a welcoming feel. As is often the case, the actual – in this case constructive-static – innovation isn’t obvious when you walk by. The lecture halls are located on the lower floors, above them are seven upper levels. If the weight were to lie directly on the lecture halls, the ceilings would have to be very thick. So much so that the building would have had one floor less in the end. The solution: a kind of bridge construction. The inherently massive, suspended construction is hardly noticeable, as the posts that are arranged along the façade, slanted from the flat roof towards the inside, look more like delicate design elements.
