open house wien “Neutral space” – does that even exist? Is it even desirable? Is meeting neighbours an asset or an annoyance? Is functionality of utmost importance? When coming up with the housing project Orasteig, the team of architects questioned a lot of things – and risked a new approach. Participation, co-determination, self-administration: From the first planning phase up until one year after moving in, professional “community organizing” encouraged the tenants to get involved, which in turn fostered a sense of community. Shared life in the neighbourhood, thusly initiated, takes place in various communal areas and rented gardens, a playground, and an outdoor cinema.
gebaut A great variety of different flat types and façades with coloured bar codes offer individuality for residents and stimulate identification with the building. The circulation and access system fosters communication.
