open house wien Bizarre, impressive, mysterious: Many adjectives have been ascribed to the granary at Port Albern. Yet nothing mysterious actually happens here; it simply stores grain. This still is impressive though, at least on-site: a capacity of 20’000 tons, 14 granaries, 61 silo cells, and elevators that overcome a total height of 30 metres. In total, four large and one smaller silo line the shore of the dock. Due to their peculiar roof constructions, the old buildings look like oversized single family homes, which makes for a rather bizarre sight. But what is no less impressive is the fact that the chain conveyors that fill the granaries and silo cells are still run by their original motors from the year 1942.
