Many know it from the movie “Before Sunrise”. The Cemetery of the Nameless is located behind the granary at Port Albern. Those buried at this cemetery were washed ashore in this area between 1845 and 1940. Many of their names are unknown, only some identities were uncovered later. In 1935, during the edification of the protective barrier, a round blessing chapel was built at the cemetery (“resurrection chapel”). To the left and right of the chapel, stairs lead from the dam down to the cemetery. The chapel was built within six months by workers who voluntarily lent a helping hand and blessed by Cardinal Innitzer. To this day, every Sunday after All Souls’ Day, a memorial for the “victims of the Danube” is held at the chapel. A float with candles and flowers serves as a reminder of the deceased.
