open house wien The concept of Austria’s first car-free housing development is simple: The residents don’t own cars, there is no garage, and only a few spots for carsharing vehicles. The money saved was invested in the construction of common rooms. Many of the areas that are communally used are located in the attic. For example the “children’s house”, the “living room” including a terrace to barbeque, plots to plant vegetables on the rooftop terrace, and a sauna. Also located on the roofs are solar collectors, along with geothermal collectors in the ground, both for the creation of warm water. A special emphasis was placed on the design of the two courtyards that are surrounded by the nine buildings: One of them has room for a small pond and a biotope. The second one is lowered so as to direct more light into the common room and the adjoined workshop.
