open house wien The water tower on the peak of the Wienerberg is so reminiscent of Istanbul. Originally, the brick building, constructed in 1898/99, provided drinking water to the elevated districts Favoriten and Meidling; as of 1910, it merely served as a reserve. Today, it is used for exhibits, cultural events, and as a mast for cellular reception. Altogether, the tower stands 67 metres tall and houses two steel container that hold 1’250 cubic metres. The container is on a pedestal at an altitude of 25 metres. The spiral-shaped ramp, 203 metres long, on the inside leads upwards along the wall with a low incline and was designed without steps – originally to prevent the workers from tripping. From the water reservoir at the top, a spiral staircase leads to a breathtaking view over Vienna’s rooftops: A gallery at an altitude of 48 metres wraps around the entire building.
