Vienna Architecture
Vienna is internationally known for its architecture. The city’s high quality of life is in no small part due to its built architecture, both historical and modern, and to the landscape architecture that has shaped the public parks and gardens of Vienna. The Architecture App is designed for the many locals and guests who are interested in contemporary architecture in Vienna. Its straight and simple structure makes it easy to find outstanding examples of contemporary architecture projects throughout the city.
The projects documented were culled from several sources. The selection for Vienna Architecture was developed in co-operation with Architekturzentrum Wien, with buildings from the collections "built" and "YoVA" as well as "Open House Vienna" complementing the project list:
Collection "gebaut" ("built") Every alteration to Vienna’s built environment is assessed with a view to its impact on the cityscape. In total, this requires some 10,000 assessment per year. Since 2005, experts at the responsible department of the Vienna City Administration (MA 19 – Architecture and Urban Design) have made a point of selecting some of the projects assessed as innovative examples to illustrate the high quality and broad variety of Viennese architecture in real life – beyond glossy pictures in architecture magazines.
Collection "YoVA" YoVA –Young Viennese Architects was initiated by the City of Vienna to promote young Viennese talent in the field of architecture. It was first launched in 2005 and is open to all local planning offices and architects below the age of 45 years who have already implemented at least one project in Vienna. The participants are selected by a jury. Over the past years YoVA has showcased 50 different offices. Landscape architecture was first included in the YoVA spectrum at the event’s 4th edition.
Collection "OPEN HOUSE VIENNA" OPEN HOUSE VIENNA has taken place annually since 2014. It opens on a weekend with free admission to architecturally worthwhile buildings across all functions and eras. Visitors are guided by volunteers to discover diverse architecture. The international architecture festival is hosted by the independent and non-profit association 'OPEN HOUSE VIENNA – Architecture for All'.
We hope you will enjoy the unique experience of discovering and rediscovering Vienna and its architecture.
