The Wien City ship docking station is more than just a pier for ships. Rather, the building creates the missing link between vibrant Schwedenplatz square and the peaceful bank of Danube Canal and thus offers an urban site on the water with a surrounding promenade. The building serves as a canopy for the waiting area of the city cruise ships and the Twin City Liner to Bratislava. Inside the structure, there is a 2-level café/restaurant with a pleasant view of Danube Canal. The interior of the café was designed to recall the Italian espresso culture of the 1950s.

The load-bearing structure of the existing Praterstern station is used for the new, 15-metre-high glazed hall that links Venediger Au and Praterstrasse as one large-scale distribution level between Underground, trains and private car traffic. Three structures housing shops and stores dock onto a passage leading to the avenue Prater Hauptallee.

The two new Underground stations are aboveground structures with generous glazing in the upper sections. Bright, high-quality materials and the artistic illumination concept ensure a pleasant mood at any time of day. The Stadion station features additional security installations and stairways to accommodate the large crowds attending sports events.

The strikingly curving structure with its transparent, oblique façade is situated at the urbanistically highly significant intersection of Döblinger Gürtel and Heiligenstädter Strasse directly above the historic Stadtbahn arches. The form of the building follows the line of the former Stadtbahn track layout and half encircles a sickle-shaped courtyard used by restaurants and bars.

• A sophisticated bridge structure done in concrete, steel and glass and designed by the architectural studio Bulant & Wailzer provides pedestrians and bikers with a practical and aesthetically appealing crossing between the 9th and 19th municipal districts.

Vienna’s cityscape will change fundamentally over an area as a big as the 8th municipal district. The redesign of this former terminus as a through station that will become a hub of international train service served as the trigger for a radical urbanistic evolution of the entire area. The architecture of the new Vienna Main Station signals openness, transparency and generosity. The roughly 25,000-square metre rhomboid canopy spanning the platforms is an eye-catcher that can be seen from far off.

This remarkably attractive, longitudinal volume offering parking space for 230 buses was erected on the former site of the Leopoldau gasworks. Optimum daylight utilisation in the slanting concrete halls and a steel framing roof for the vehicles are among its both functional and aesthetic features.

In 1894, Otto Wagner was commissioned with the architectural design of the Stadtbahn network with its 36 stations, viaducts and bridges over a total length of 40 km. With respect to their design, place in architectural history and Vienna’s urbanistic tissue, the station buildings, which were planned for above- and belowground line routing, are outstanding examples of mass transit structures.

The EU project URBan InterventION aimed at the upgrading and functional improvement of the central zone of the 6-km western Gürtel section by redesigning and enlarging green spaces and finding new tenants for the Stadtbahn arches to render this dilapidated urban area more attractive and change its image for good.
