The Austrian pavilion designed by Karl Schwanzer for the Brussels World’s Fair in 1958 impressed with its innovative suspended steel construction, which resulted in a seemingly floating block. The pavilion was disassembled and reinstalled in Vienna as an art museum in 1962. After its rehabilitation and enlargement by Adolf Krischanitz, it was reinaugurated in 2011 with the new name “21er Haus” as a branch of Austrian Gallery Belvedere and now serves as an exhibition venue for 21st-century art.

With sincere dedication and commitment to the principles of ecological housing construction, the City of Vienna decided to build Europe’s largest passive house development near Belvedere Palace. The original master plan by Norman Foster submitted in 1999 was followed by an urbanistic ideas competition. The already implemented construction stage embodies the manifold formal languages of renowned architectural studios and landscape planners.

Hotel Daniel is located in a 1960s architectural gem with a curtain wall façade under monument protection. In addition to the lovingly executed rehabilitation of the building, the interior spaces imbued with the personal style of the design-savvy client leave an enticing impression. With its mix of vintage and modern design, the hotel lobby conveys a relaxed living-room atmosphere that attracts not only hotel guests.

On a former slaughterhouse site, this housing project and the park in which it is embedded form a new small city quarter in its own right. The structures rest atop stilts, which ensures airy permeability and creates a transition zone to the densely built-up urban area outside, while the transversal block and town villas are characterised by the three-dimensional façade structure of their vertical gardens.

With its rising "wing", this structure – called a "recumbent high-rise sculpture" by the architects – is to be perceived from the cars passing by on the city motorway and far beyond its physical location as a signal, landmark and initial project for a new urban development area on the site of a former slaughterhouse yard.
