Inter alia, a spacious residential quarter with a park and adjoining education campus was developed on one of Europe’s currently biggest construction sites around the new Vienna Main Station. Despite the presence of several developers, architects and landscape planners, it was possible to plan all open spaces as interlocking zones without fences, thereby ensuring an open and generous courtyard situation within the modern perimeter buildings. With its innovative educational and architectural concept, the education campus is considered one of the City of Vienna’s flagship schools.

Inspired by the natural sulphur springs of Oberlaa, the architects based their design on the winding course of a stream to serve as a leitmotiv for the entire spa and its varied attractions. Many differently themed zones – each with its individual atmosphere created by diverse materials, chromatic and illumination moods – are grouped along the “riverbanks”.

The Monte Laa campus is the first school erected according to the campus school model of the City of Vienna, which combines an all-day primary school and a kindergarten in one building with adjoining open spaces. The shape of the building reflects the linear, public green area of Monte Laa Park as it unfolds, serpent-like, along the boundary with the neighbouring property. The shared sports grounds, open areas and canteen rooms allow for special synergies between school and kindergarten.

With this project composed of 250 flats in multipart blocks with projecting, spacious verandas, terraces and bays, the architect has created an alternative to closed linear blocks. Light incidence, visual links and optimised functionality are the formal key parameters of a housing project that offers high open space quality despite substantial condensation.

The ellipsoidal residential high-rise situated between Matzleinsdorferplatz and Wienerberg rests atop a rectangular, two-part base that can be used by flexibly subdivided offices.
On the upper storeys, projecting, glazed panoramic bay-type loggias are part of every flat and ensure excellent views.

Vienna’s cityscape will change fundamentally over an area as a big as the 8th municipal district. The redesign of this former terminus as a through station that will become a hub of international train service served as the trigger for a radical urbanistic evolution of the entire area. The architecture of the new Vienna Main Station signals openness, transparency and generosity. The roughly 25,000-square metre rhomboid canopy spanning the platforms is an eye-catcher that can be seen from far off.

The Monte Laa Park is the heart, meeting-point and central focus of the new residential quarter Monte Laa. Green lawns, sculptural objects, ramps, a great variety of plants as well as multiple levels offer an urban space for recreation and communication on this linear plot. In addition, the park provides the surrounding residential and office buildings with a pleasant and attractive view.

The two rectangular glass towers partly interconnected by bridges dominate the urban silhouette at Vienna’s southern periphery. With their striking height and unique transparency, these office high-rises emerge from a two-storey, trapezoid base linking them to the surrounding new neighbourhood Wienerberg City.
