The aspern Vienna’s Urban Lakeside project is one of Europe’s biggest urban development ventures. On this former airfield, a new urban quarter offering 20,000 workplaces and housing for another 20,000 residents is to emerge until 2028. The centre of the Urban Lakeside is formed by a large lake set in the midst of a spacious park. Although the first residents will not move in before late 2014, the U2 Vienna Underground line was extended already in 2013 to this huge area, where identity-fostering activities take place regularly even before the arrival of the first Lakesiders.

The DC Towers (Donau City Towers) designed by Dominique Perrault will add a decisive accent to Vienna’s skyline. The original design provides for 2 towers obliquely facing each other to create an aerodynamic flow edge while also forming an urban square at street level. With a height of 250 metres, the already erected DC Tower 1 is not only Austria’s highest building, but also a new city landmark. The second, somewhat lower tower is still awaiting construction.

This residential development is dedicated to the overarching theme of intergenerational housing: 3 generations of architects created intelligent solutions to meet the needs of different life phases. The passive house “Wohnregal” by ARTEC acts as an acoustic barrier for the tranquil, village-type residential zone behind it. The uniform use of timber façades conveys a sense of cohesiveness despite the different architectural languages employed.

The terraced building offers high-quality housing and open-space situations across all storeys. The range of available dwellings comprises single-person attic flats with large terraces, flexible (patchwork) family apartments whose living rooms allow for the partitioning-off of one or two temporary bedrooms if required, as well as an assisted living community for children without a family. The colour design harmonises the thus created diversity to instil a homogenous neighbourhood feeling with a unique identity.

The new Vienna Ice Sports Centre was built in the course of an enlargement of the Albert Schultz Hall to create a modern ice hockey stadium for up to 10,000 spectators. The big support structures of the roof weightlessly span the three rinks and disclose a series of cross-vistas and views into the halls.

These three separate projects implemented in Heustadelgasse are characterised by volumetrically highly complex freestanding structures, condensed terraced houses with colour accents and wood-panelled blocks with large glazed surfaces distributed across a regular grid and boasting a high number of small private gardens.

On behalf of Österreichisches Siedlungswerk, a project co-operative composed of two studios designed a themed development geared towards urban professionals (single multi-unit block by the cherry-tree park) as well as senior citizens (line-type building on Attemsgasse). Both structures house a total of 101 residential units, are linked by a shared access zone and subtly correspond in their choice of materials and colour schemes.

On the site formerly occupied by the Carl Barracks in Vienna’s 22nd municipal district Donaustadt, a total of 273 subsidised rental flats are situated in four rows with different building heights and a great variety of flat layouts. The open spaces of this housing development harmoniously integrated into its surroundings are attractively designed all around.

The unusual, irregular façade apertures resembling pixel graphics result in highly varied effects for the flat layouts, endowing each of the 21 units with an individual mood and view. The excellently appointed lobby allows for crossing directly from the street into the garden.

This project encompassing a total of 146 subsidised rental flats is situated close to Kagraner Platz. Section A is organised as a line building wrapped around the rest of the project, while Section B takes the form of a transversal block with projecting head, large glass panes for the upper storeys and ground-floor tenant gardens. In its turn, the thus encircled Section C is a condensed, low-rise structure accessed by individual lanes.

The interplay of receding and projecting elements structures the mass of this roughly 100-metre glass tower situated along the north-western edge of the Donau City site. A wide, cantilevered canopy roof above the large, elegant sky lobby with terrace marks the outstanding silhouette of this splendidly appointed building.

After the covering of the Danube riverside motorway, this site, which originally had been singled out for the aborted Vienna-Budapest World’s Fair of 1995, was envisioned by the development company WED to become a new urban expansion area. Since 1998, intense construction activities include housing estates and office towers in this satellite centre efficiently linked to Vienna’s city by the U1 Underground line.

With its glass body obliquely projecting from the southern façade und tapering downwards to a narrow point, this structure – probably the most spectacular of the three adjacent residential high-rises of the Wohnpark Alte Donau cluster – definitely embodies the architectural language of Coop Himmelblau and moreover meets mixed-use requirements by offering common spaces in the form of sky lobbies.

The three architects/studios designed individual building types arranged as long and curving rows on the rectangular plot at the periphery of the 22nd municipal district Donaustadt. Special building designs for the head-ends of the rows and the extravagant colour scheme adopted by Adolf Krischanitz’s elements endow the estate with its incomparable visual appeal.

Together with the entire Tech Gate ensemble, the Tech Gate Tower forms a kind of gateway to the Donau City site. The prismatic, triangular tower with its curving glass façade is placed atop a "bastion" built before in conjunction with Tech Gate. The building is capped off majestically with an event-venue top storey featuring a terrace.

Two high-rise slabs of roughly 100 metres vie with each other for height. Arranged parallel though slightly displaced one vis-à-vis the other, the two narrow blocks shine with a cool and glassy look, elegant entrance hall, exquisite furnishings and classy sky lobby at the heart of the Donau City development, thus adding another chic element to the group of international office high-rises in the area.
