open house wien Nowadays, exhibitions, design markets, or theatre productions take place here, but some time ago, horse-drawn vehicles were loaded with bread to be delivered to stores in Vienna. During construction of the shipping hall in 1912, its 2’200 square metres and bridge support structure spanning over 40 metres made it one of the biggest pillar-free halls in Europe. A feat of engineering that continues to impress even today. Today, bread is only baked in the southern part of the Anker Bread Factory. Since 2009, galleries, studios, and show rooms line the two large courtyards. Students of the local music, film, and social academies meet here during their lunch breaks. In addition, spacious lofts are being developed where Friedrich Schön – a student of Theophil Hansen – had once built a bakery, wagon shed, warehouses, and horse stables. All in all, twelve objects were renovated and adapted for their new usage.
