The current stadium complex is composed of three sections dating from different periods. The core building (1931) was designed by Otto Ernst Schweitzer; the outside sheath (1959) is by Theodor Schöll, and the roofing (1986) was devised by Erich Frantl as a suspended frame structure spanning 277 x 233 metres, considered one of the biggest of its kind worldwide. The elastic steel roof moreover excels due to special innovations for its load-carrying system and superlative formal standards.

In October 2013, Europe’s currently largest new university building was inaugurated next to the Vienna Prater. The campus of the new Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) comprises 6 buildings covering an area of 90,000 square metres as well as an intelligently designed open space conceived as a “walk-along park” with different stations. The core of this group of buildings designed by leading international architects is the Library and Learning Centre by Zaha Hadid.
Planned as a “green” building, the project is also to serve as a showcase of ecological and economic sustainability.

This remarkably attractive, longitudinal volume offering parking space for 230 buses was erected on the former site of the Leopoldau gasworks. Optimum daylight utilisation in the slanting concrete halls and a steel framing roof for the vehicles are among its both functional and aesthetic features.

The new Vienna Ice Sports Centre was built in the course of an enlargement of the Albert Schultz Hall to create a modern ice hockey stadium for up to 10,000 spectators. The big support structures of the roof weightlessly span the three rinks and disclose a series of cross-vistas and views into the halls.

Inspired by the natural sulphur springs of Oberlaa, the architects based their design on the winding course of a stream to serve as a leitmotiv for the entire spa and its varied attractions. Many differently themed zones – each with its individual atmosphere created by diverse materials, chromatic and illumination moods – are grouped along the “riverbanks”.

The Wien City ship docking station is more than just a pier for ships. Rather, the building creates the missing link between vibrant Schwedenplatz square and the peaceful bank of Danube Canal and thus offers an urban site on the water with a surrounding promenade. The building serves as a canopy for the waiting area of the city cruise ships and the Twin City Liner to Bratislava. Inside the structure, there is a 2-level café/restaurant with a pleasant view of Danube Canal. The interior of the café was designed to recall the Italian espresso culture of the 1950s.

Vienna’s cityscape will change fundamentally over an area as a big as the 8th municipal district. The redesign of this former terminus as a through station that will become a hub of international train service served as the trigger for a radical urbanistic evolution of the entire area. The architecture of the new Vienna Main Station signals openness, transparency and generosity. The roughly 25,000-square metre rhomboid canopy spanning the platforms is an eye-catcher that can be seen from far off.

The Monte Laa campus is the first school erected according to the campus school model of the City of Vienna, which combines an all-day primary school and a kindergarten in one building with adjoining open spaces. The shape of the building reflects the linear, public green area of Monte Laa Park as it unfolds, serpent-like, along the boundary with the neighbouring property. The shared sports grounds, open areas and canteen rooms allow for special synergies between school and kindergarten.
